Title : Diogenes syndrome and psychosis: Three clinical cases summary

Abstract:

Background: The occurrence of Diogenes syndrome in the context of psychosis is scarcely described in the literature. This syndrome is most frequently observed in elderly individuals with frontotemporal dementia.

Methods: We present three new cases of Diogenes syndrome treated during hospitalization in a psychiatric department. These cases were analyzed on social, psychiatric, and cognitive levels. Our aim was to explore Diogenes syndrome within the context of psychosis and to develop a therapeutic approach.

Results: The clinical cases focus on Diogenes syndrome in the context of chronic psychosis. Psychosis manifestations led these patients to isolate themselves, resulting in extreme neglect of hygiene and housing. These cases highlight the need for a deeper understanding of Diogenes syndrome, enabling quicker diagnosis and effective therapeutic strategies. Medical and social interventions within the unit helped manage symptoms and facilitated successful patient institutionalization and adaptation.

Conclusion: When encountering individuals living in particularly unsanitary conditions, a medical evaluation is crucial. Identifying underlying psychiatric pathology necessitates a response that extends beyond simple social measures. This condition is not indicative of a conscious lifestyle choice, thus emphasizing the need for comprehensive medical and social care.
