Title : Modifiers and Driver: A Fresh Perspective on Basic Neurotransmitter Roles
Abstract:
Explanation of the most fundamental roles of neurotransmitters is missing from current medical science. A good description of function should be simple and should act as a framework that allows for more complexity. I propose a simple model of neurotransmitter function that exhibits remarkable ability to incorporate more complex ideas. In its most simplistic form, this model states that there is one driving neurotransmitter and that the other neurotransmitters modify that driving function. This Modifiers and Driver (MAD) model appears to allow broad incorporation of current understanding of neurotransmitter function and exhibits remarkable potential for clarifying principles of neuronal communication. If neuronal communication can be reliably explained then understanding of many bodily functions would be enhanced. The model is explained as simply as can be managed and its impressive utility is shown using the example of migraine pathophysiology.
What will audience learn from your presentation?
Explain how the audience will be able to use what they learn?
The audience will be able to either understand the fundamentals of neurotransmitter functions a little better (which has obvious benefits), or they will have the opportunity to exercise the logic of their own position by shooting my idea down.
How will this help the audience in their job?
Is this research that other faculty could use to expand their research or teaching? Does this provide a practical solution to a problem that could simplify or make a designer’s job more efficient? Will it improve the accuracy of a design, or provide new information to assist in a design problem? List all other benefits.
This is a basic molecular model that describes the basics of neurotransmitter functions, and may provide a way to interpret experimental results in neurology in a more consistent fashion. For example, the apparently complicated topic of serotonin syndrome becomes more understandable with this model in mind, and experimental results may make more sense given this understanding.
