Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders that involve the degeneration and death of neurons over time. These diseases can develop due to genetic or environmental factors, and can affect both the central and peripheral nervous system. The most common neurodegenerative diseases are Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of dementia characterized by the gradual loss of memory, language, and other cognitive functions. It is the most common form of dementia, and affects roughly 5.8 million people in the United States. Huntington's disease is a genetic disorder that causes the progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the brain, and results in declining physical and mental abilities. It is estimated to affect 30,000 to 50,000 people in the United States. Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disability and in some cases cognitive decline. It is caused by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the brain and affects roughly 1 million Americans with an additional 60,000 people developing the condition each year. ALS is a neurological disorder that attacks motor neurons in the brain and the spinal cord, causing muscle weakness and paralysis throughout the body. It is estimated to affect around 14,000 to 15,000 people in the United States. Neurodegenerative diseases can cause a wide variety of symptoms depending on the type of disorder and the area of the nervous system that is affected. The most common symptoms include memory loss, confusion, changes in behavior, slow movement, problems with speech, and trouble swallowing. Treatment for these diseases is often focused on managing symptoms and slowing the progression of the disorder. Additionally, some studies have indicated that certain medications, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle modifications may be helpful in slowing the progression of the disease.
