Neurorehabilitation is a form of healthcare that provides various treatments and therapies for individuals to help recover from neurological injury or illness. It is based on the understanding that the nervous system and its associated functions are able to recover, adapt, and be reinforced through certain actions. Neurorehabilitation focuses on cognitive, physical, speech, and other neurologically-related therapy services to help revive normal function. It is widely accepted that recovery from neurological injuries can be enhanced by participating in different neurorehabilitation services. These services can be tailored to meet the individual needs of each person and may include physical exercises tailored to suit the individual, as well as activities that involve motor planning, proprioceptive awareness, spatial orientation, and coordination. Cognitive training may include both individual and group sessions which focus on improving cognitive function and functioning in everyday life. Speech and language therapy provides strengthening of existing communication through drills, individual tasks, and group conversations. Occupational therapy may involve activity analysis, sensory processing assessments, and strategies to help increase the participation and quality of life in the patient. Neurorehabilitation is most often utilized when a patient has experienced a stroke, traumatic brain injury, progressive neurologic disorder, or other traumatic neurological event. Depending on the initial diagnosis and the severity of the injury, the type of treatment and amount of therapy required will vary. Despite the wide range of options available to patients, many of these therapies may not be completely successful without regular participation and maintenance of the treatment protocols. The goal of a neurorehabilitation program is to provide a continuing plan of treatment in order to maximize the function and quality of life of the individual. With the success of modern technologies and treatments, the outlook for those who have suffered a neurological injury has improved greatly. Neurorehabilitation offers hope to those who have suffered a neurotrauma and strives to offer them the best possible chance at full recovery.
