Neuropsychology is a scientific field that studies the relationship between the brain and behaviour. It examines how behaviour is affected by mental processes, hormones, neurological structures, and physiological factors. Neuropsychology combines aspects of psychology, neuroscience, neurology, and biopsychology to understand the causes and effects of neurologic illnesses and disorders. Neuropsychology relies on numerous methods to understand human behaviour. These include psychological tests such as verbal and nonverbal intelligence tests, personality tests, and behavioural assessments. Neuropsychologists also use neuroimaging techniques to identify structural and functional abnormalities of the brain. MRI and CT scans allow neuropsychologists to observe brain anatomy and indirectly measure brain function. Additionally, electroencephalography (EEG) is used to measure and monitor electrical activity in the brain. Neuropsychology is used to study brain development over time. It examines normal and abnormal cognition, as well as how the brain processes language, memory, executive function, problem solving, emotion, and behavior. Neuropsychology is also used to diagnose and treat neurological and psychological issues, such as mental illness, dementia, and learning disabilities. Neuropsychologists may provide support and treatment for individuals who have sustained an acquired brain injury. Neuropsychological research has identified multiple areas of the brain that are responsible for certain functions. These studies have given insight into the mechanisms of learning, memory, attention, and brain plasticity. Neuropsychology is also widely used in clinical practice to diagnose and assess the severity of neurological conditions. Neuropsychologists evaluate patients and recommend treatment plans, such as medication and cognitive therapy. Neuropsychology has become essential in understanding development and assessment of cognitive diseases. As the field evolves, new research methods will be developed to examine brain-behaviour relationships. Neuropsychology is an exciting area that offers many opportunities to advance research and clinical practice.
