Neurological System

Neurological System

The neurological system is responsible for the processing and communication of signals through the body, allowing us to think, perceive and move. It is made up of two main parts: the central nervous system (brain and spine) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves throughout the body). The brain is arguably the most important organ in the body, as it controls the activity of every other part in the body. The brains main job is to receive, process and send out electrical signals throughout the body. The spinal cord is a thick cord of nerve tissue that runs from the base of the skull down through the vertebral column. It is responsible for carrying signals from the brain to the rest of the body. Nerves from the spinal cord branch out to different parts of the body, allowing it to send and receive signals directly from the brain. Our body's peripheral nervous system is composed of 12 cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. The cranial nerves are responsible for controlling essential functions like movement and sensory perception, while the spinal nerves are responsible for controlling involuntary actions like breathing and muscle movement. Together, the nerves form nerve pathways that allow the brain to send and receive signals. The brain and nervous system are the foundation of how our bodies work. They’re responsible for controlling mood, behavior, movement, and even learning and memory. Damage to this system can be devastating and cause many physical and cognitive disabilities. That’s why it’s important to take care of your brain and make sure it has all the essential vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly.
