Neurological illnesses occur in the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord and nerves, which can range from mild to severe. They are often genetic, but environmental factors, accidents and disease can also cause them. One of the most common neurological illnesses is a stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or ruptures, cutting off oxygen to the brain. Aside from physical disability, associated symptoms include headache, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, facial drooping, confusion, numbness in the limbs and difficulty with mobility. With proper treatment and rehabilitation, recovery is often possible. Additionally, epilepsy is one of the most common neurological illnesses, with approximately 1 in 26 American adults developing epileptic seizures at some point in their lives. These seizures are usually triggered by environmental elements, such as lack of sleep or flashing lights. Treatment options range from medications to surgery, and many people are able to control their seizures with proper treatment. Parkinson's disease is another neurological illness that affects muscle movement. The symptoms of this degenerative disorder include muscle tremors, difficulty walking, stiffness and balance issues. While there is no cure for Parkinson's, a variety of treatments can be used to help manage the symptoms. Finally, Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic neurological condition that is characterized by inflammation of the nerves and can lead to vision loss, numbness and tingling, balance issues, and pain. The cause of MS is unknown, and while treatments can help manage symptoms, there is no cure currently. Overall, neurological illnesses can have a serious impact on a patient's quality of life, but many treatments are available to help. Diagnosis and treatment should be done as soon as possible for the best possible outcomes.
