Neurodegenerative disorders are a group of progressive neurological diseases that cause the gradual loss of structure or function of nerve tissues including the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Neurodegenerative disorders generally manifest as a combination of physical and cognitive symptoms, and are characterized by the gradual degeneration and death of nerve cells. The most common forms of neurodegenerative disorders are Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Prion diseases. In people diagnosed with one of these disorders, changes occur in the brain that disturb its functioning at the cellular and molecular level. This can lead to dysfunction in the affected area of the brain, which manifests as impaired physical functioning and cognitive decline. The exact cause of most neurodegenerative disorders is still unknown, but there are many theories that suggest these disorders may involve genetic and environmental factors, such as aging, lifestyle choices, or exposure to toxic chemicals and substances. The primary symptom of a neurodegenerative disorder is the progressive loss of brain cell functioning, causing physical and cognitive decline. Symptoms of neurodegenerative disorders vary greatly from person to person, but may include changes in motor control, balance, speech, facial expression, coordination, memory, and thinking abilities. Additionally, many neurodegenerative disorders can cause behavior and mood changes. Treatment of neurodegenerative disorders is goal-oriented and focuses on providing supportive care, symptom relief, and improved quality of life. Treatment may include medications to address specific symptoms, physical and occupational therapy, and psychosocial interventions. Research into potential treatments for these conditions is ongoing, and novel therapeutic approaches are being explored.
