Mental disorder, also known as a mental illness or psychiatric disorder, is a behavioral or mental pattern that causes significant distress or impairment of personal functioning. These disorders affect how a person thinks, feels, and behaves, and can range from mild to severe. Some types of mental disorders include mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders (panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder), and psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, delusional disorder). Other mental health issues can include eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa), personality disorders (borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder), and post-traumatic stress disorder. Mental health issues can also include substance abuse, addiction, and gambling disorder. In order to diagnose a mental disorder, mental health professionals perform a comprehensive assessment that includes a physical examination, psychological evaluation, and assessment of the patient’s life history. The assessment may involve interviews with the patient and family members, lab tests, and other medical tests such as brain scans. In some cases, physicians may also refer a patient to a psychiatrist or psychologist for further evaluation. The most effective treatment for a mental disorder depends on the type and severity of the condition. In some cases, medication and/or psychotherapy (cognitive behavioral therapy, for example) may be recommended to manage the symptoms and improve functioning. In others, lifestyle changes may be necessary and group therapy may be beneficial. In more severe cases, inpatient hospitalization may be required for stabilization or monitoring. Overall, mental health issues are very common and are often treatable. If you are experiencing symptoms of a mental disorder, it is important to seek help from a mental health professional who can provide proper diagnosis and treatment.
