Title : Cognitive impairment in the elderly in rural of Haryana, India: A study of smoking, alcohol consumption and aging using cognitive screening & MOCA

Abstract:

The study's objectives were to calculate the prevalence of cognitive impairment in older adults in rural areas of Haryana, India, and to ascertain how it related to impairments, alcohol use, and smoking.

A clinical diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment reflects a physician's best estimate of the cause of a patient's symptoms. People diagnosed with MCI as a result of Alzheimer's disease include those who have abnormal results from a brain positron emission tomography (PET) scan or a spinal fluid test for amyloid beta protein, the protein found in amyloid plaques, one of the two hallmarks of the disease.

Materials and Procedures: 176 senior citizens 65 years of age and over participated in this community-based cross-sectional study, which was conducted in a rural field practice area of a medical college in the Indian state of Haryana. The MOCA test was utilized to assess cognitive impairment. Unadjusted chances ratios with a 90% confidence interval were generated to identify variables linked to cognitive impairment, and adjusted odds ratios were computed using binary logistic regression analysis. Results: Of the senior subjects, 9.5% had cognitive impairment. Significantly greater levels of cognitive impairment were seen among those 75 years of age and older, single, illiterate, elderly living alone, smokers, current alcohol consumers, and elderly with impairments to their eyes, hearing, or ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). Among the aged population of the Indian state of Haryana, there was an independent correlation found between cognitive impairment and hookah smoking, and impairment in ADLs. Improving their quality of life may be possible with early detection of cognitive deterioration and prompt intervention.
