Title : Investigating the efficacy of neurofeedback via EEG to improve cognition

Abstract:

Cognitive function plays a crucial role in daily life. Traditional methods for enhancing cognition requires dedicated practice and can be challenging to maintain. This research explores the potential of Electroencephalography (EEG) technology, specifically neurofeedback, as a tool to improve cognitive function. EEG measures electrical activity in the brain, providing insights into a person's mental state. Neurofeedback utilizes this real-time EEG data to provide feedback to the user, allowing them to learn how to modify their brainwave patterns. Similar to commercially available products like the Focuscalm Headband, this research proposes the development of an EEG-based neurofeedback system specifically designed for the Indian market.

This paper aims to investigate the efficacy of EEG neurofeedback in enhancing cognitive function in a healthy population. The research will address the following key areas:

  1. Understanding the Neural Correlates of Cognitive Function: This section will delve into the specific brainwave patterns associated with optimal cognitive performance.
  2. Neurofeedback Protocols for Cognitive Enhancement: Here, the research will explore current neurofeedback training protocols designed to improve focus, attention, and memory, focusing on relevant frequencies.
  3. Adapting Neurofeedback for the Indian Market: This section will consider cultural nuances and existing cognitive training practices in India to design a culturally appropriate neurofeedback system.
  4. Evaluation and Validation: The research will propose a study design to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed neurofeedback system in enhancing cognitive function in Indian participants. The study will compare the effectiveness of neurofeedback with a control group or other cognitive training methods.

The anticipated outcomes of this research are: A deeper understanding of how EEG neurofeedback can complement existing cognitive training practices in India, the development of a culturally relevant and user-friendly neurofeedback headband prototype for the Indian market and empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the proposed system in enhancing cognitive function.

This research holds significant promise as shown by existing companies who are currently using EEG neurofeedback for cognitive enhancement like NeuroSky, NeurOptimal, Sensai and Bitbrain. The global Electroencephalography Devices (EEG) market size was worth around USD 1200 million in 2022 and is predicted to grow to around USD 2400 million by 2030 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of roughly 9.5% between 2023 and 2030.
